What is C.A.N.S?

Culpeper Automated Notification System (C.A.N.S.) welcomes you to our newest communication tool that will be used to improve communications between government, agencies and our citizens. As this service evolves you will be allowed to sign up for broadcasts such as event information, weather announcements and emergency notifications. Information can be distributed to telephones (locally), cell phones, email, and fax machines.

Instructions to use C.A.N.S.

To use the C.A.N.S. system all that is required is a valid email address. You can only register an email address one time in the system. Please remember that apostrophes cannot be used in any field due to database restrictions.

Go to http://www.culpepercounty.gov/SelectAlert/login.aspx to sign up for the service:

There is an icon on the main web page, www.culpepercounty.gov that will also link you directly to this service.

If you do not have an account on the C.A.N.S. system click on the link under the NEW User prompt? - It reads: Please register here if you do not have an account. You will be asked to complete the appropriate information – email and password.

The next page that comes up is the contact page for your account. Here you will be prompted to enter you contact information such as telephone number and address. Complete as much or as little as you wish, depending on how you want to receive broadcasts. When you click on the Create New Account button the system will display the following message:

Thank you for signing up.


An email will be sent to you shortly. Follow the instructions in the email to complete the signup process.

In the email message is a web address link. Click on the link and you will be directed to the C.A.N.S. system. The web page has three tabs at the top. The three tabs are, Home, Edit My Account and Edit My Alerts.

  • Home is a brief explanation of the system
  • Edit My Account gives you ability to change contact information such as address, telephone number, email address, etc. Here you can change your password and contact times – the times you wish to receive information from C.A.N.S. or you can remove your account if you choose to not participate in the notification system.
  • Edit My Alerts is where you can select what information you wish to receive from Culpeper County. Here you select what you want and how you desire to receive the broadcast. Presently we offer communication to telephone, (locally) fax, email, and TTY devices based on what is available for the individual broadcasts.

When you complete your selections click on the Save button. When finished click Logout.
