PET LICENSING

Both State and County law requires that all dogs that are four (4) months old or older be vaccinated with a rabies vaccine which has been approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Such vaccine shall be administered by or under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian.

 

In compliance with State law, Culpeper County requires that every such dog be licensed unless the dog is trained and serving as a guide dog for a blind or hearing-impaired person. This include dogs that reside either in the Town or County of Culpeper.

 

You may purchase your dog license/tag by mail, or in person at the Treasurer’s office at 151 N Main Street, or in person at the Department of Animal Services at 10144 James Monroe Highway.  You must present evidence of vaccination and pay a licensing fee.  The fee for a sexed dog is $10.00 and the fee for an unsexed dog is $5.00.  Any person running a commercial dog kennel or keeping dogs in a kennel enclosure may apply for kennel license tags.  Kennel license tags are sold in blocks of ten (10) for $50.00 and are available only at the Treasurer’s office.  Evidence of vaccination for each dog must be presented.  If the number of dogs owned is less then ten, the remainder of the tags will be held in the Treasurer’s Office until additional dogs are acquired.

 

The dog license year runs from January 1st to December 31st of each year. The licenses go on sale beginning November 1st of the preceding year and must be purchased by January 31st of the license year.

 

This law is designed to help prevent rabies outbreaks. The license/tag is proof that your dog has been vaccinated. But, just as important, the tag identifies your dog should it get lost. The Treasurer's Office maintains a list of license/tag numbers and can assist Animal Services in notifying you if your dog is missing and found.

 

Dog license tags should be fastened to a collar worn by the dog. Any dog not wearing a current tag is considered a stray and will be taken to the County shelter.
